At Premier Dental of Oakwood, we understand that dental visits can be daunting for many patients. Whether it's due to previous negative experiences or childhood trauma, we want everyone to receive the dental care they need. That’s why we offer comprehensive sedation dentistry options.
Sedation dentistry involves the use of anti-anxiety medications to help nervous or fearful patients tolerate their dental treatments. The primary goal of sedation dentistry is to minimize the sights, sounds, and sometimes even the memory of the dental procedure. The level of sedation varies for each patient, depending on their specific needs and how their body responds to medication.
Some patients need just a slight reduction in their anxiety, while others require more profound sedation to feel comfortable. At Premier Dental of Oakwood, we provide three types of sedation dentistry to meet diverse needs:
- NO2 (Laughing Gas): Laughing gas offers mild sedation and helps patients feel more at ease during their visit. It doesn't induce sleep but reduces anxiety and awareness of the procedure. There are no lingering effects, so patients do not need someone to drive them to and from the appointment. Note: Laughing gas is not recommended for pregnant patients.
- Oral Sedation: This involves taking a sedative medication in pill form. Effects can vary widely, as people metabolize medications differently. Some may experience deep relaxation, while others might feel only mild effects.
- IV Sedation: For patients with severe anxiety, intravenous (IV) sedation is an effective option. A licensed anesthesiologist administers medications through an IV to keep the patient deeply sedated throughout the procedure. This method is particularly useful for extensive treatments like wisdom tooth removal or major dental surgery.
