Premier Dental Insurance Overview
Dental insurance is a topic that many find confusing. The problem is that we try to compare it to other types of medical insurance or auto insurance, and that is like comparing apples to oranges. They simply are not the same thing.
How Dental Insurance Differs from Other Insurance
Not so with dental insurance! Some dental insurance plans may include a deductible, but it is very low (sometimes only $50). Rather than having a maximum amount that you pay out of pocket, like the deductible with medical insurance, the insurance company has a maximum amount that it will pay. No matter how much dental work you require, the insurance company will not pay more than the stated maximum benefits in your plan.
Unfortunately, most dental insurance maximums have not increased at the rate of our cost of living. In fact, many plans provide the exact same amount of benefits that they provided in the 1970’s. In those days, $1500 would cover a lot of dental work. Today, that is barely enough to have one tooth repaired with a dental crown!
Despite that lack of increase, we still want to enable you to get the most out of your dental insurance. This is why we are in-network with many dental insurance carriers (see list below). As in-network providers, we work with you and your specific insurance plan to give you the dental care you need with the most financial help from your insurance.
What are the Different Types of Dental Insurance We Accept?
Most people do not get to choose what type of dental insurance they have, as it is usually provided by an employer. It is important to know which type you have so you understand the different restrictions.
PPO stands for Preferred Provider Network. This type of plan allows you to choose your dental provider and gives you the option to receive benefits with both in-network and out-of-network providers. Typically, your plan will give greater benefits when you see an in-network provider.
DMO stands for Dental Management Organization. These low-cost plans do not allow you to choose your dental provider. They assign you to a specific office for your dental care. If you choose to go to a different dental office, you will not receive any benefits.
Dental Discount Plans
There are many different independent discount dental plans available today. These are a type of “subscription” service. You pay a yearly fee in order to get a reduced, or discounted, price on your dental costs. These plans are gaining in popularity, so as time progresses, you can find more and more dental offices that accept these plans.
If you aren’t eligible for dental benefits through work or self employed, self-pay is an option. We offer affordable financing options as well as a discount for cash payments for dental services.
How to Get the Most out of Your Dental Insurance
Many people forget that they even have dental insurance benefits until they have a dental problem! By that time, fixing a single tooth could cost well over your maximum limit.
In order to get the most out of your dental insurance, you should see your dentist for consistent professional teeth cleanings, x-rays and dental evaluations. When you skip these appointments or put them off until something bothers you, you are allowing benefits to expire. If you do not use your insurance in a year, it does not carry over to the next year. You either use them or lose them.
You should also see an in-network provider. Because in-network providers have contracts with your dental insurance company, your out-of-pocket expenses are lower. Premier Dental of Ohio is in-network with many PPO dental plans, some DMO plans, and Medicaid (in select locations). We also offer financing options to patients without dental insurance and a significant discount to patients paying cash.
